Siam Insect-zoo & Museum (SIZ) is a place for breeding, rearing and displaying insects and arachnids including butterflies, beetles (flower beetles, horned beetles-scarabaeidae and stags-Lucanidae mainly), leaf insects, sticks insects, mantis, giant scorpions, giant spiders (Tarantula), cockroaches, for examples. We study as well as displaying them to the public. We have our own homepage on insects, www.malaeng.com or www.siaminsectzoo.com presenting in two languages, English and Thai (malaeng in Thai is meant insects).

Siam Insect Zoo & Museum (SIZ), or currently revised name “Siam Insect Museum” has been selected by the National Discovery Museum Institute (NDMI) as an outstanding discovery museum knowledge model for the north of Thailand in 2011.
พิพิธภัณฑ์สวนสัตว์แมลงสยาม หรือในชื่อจดทะเบียนใหม่ “พิพิธภัณฑ์แมลงสยาม” ได้รับการคัดเลือกจากสถาบันพิพิธภัณฑ์การเรียนรู้แห่งชาติ (สพร.) ให้เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ต้นแบบของภาคเหนือในปี พ.ศ. 2554

Because of the above reason we have a big renovation to improve the exhibition activities since the end of 2011 and we have tried to do our best to run the museum and live insect activities. Visitors wll enjoy to hold, to touch none poisonous insects and arachnids as well as photographying closely especially the live insects, including walking sticks, mantis, beetles,  butterfly caterpillars, crickets and scorpions, for examples. While we have a serious butterfly breeding and rearing activity, therefore we have hundreds of various butterflies in our butterfly garden the whole year round.

         SIZ has been raised by the EK-AMNUAY family on the 1st of October 2006. Mr. Pisuth EK-AMNUAY, an insect taxonomist with a Master Degree in Entomology from Kasetsart University in 1982. Mr. Suttha EK-AMNUAY the elder son of the two who graduated in architecture from Silpakorn University in 2006. He is a beetle specialist after some years of breeding and rearing experiences. Our worldwide insect collection has been collected for more than 30 years ago in most of the major groups of insects. We have arranged many of them for displaying as well as amazing live museum. Our large butterfly house with flowers as the nectar sources for the flying butterflies and many kinds of the larval food-plants for them. We put many name tags with colored photo on major larval food-plants for butterfly-lovers to learn the plant names and the relationship with each butterfly. Other various-sized insect cages for captive breeding of some other insects and arachnids have been displayed in front of the butterfly house. This will be a good opportunity for visitors especially natural lover and those who come with the family to see our insect displaying at various styles at one place and time. Our expectation is not a dream and closer to be true to be well aware of for the public in Thailand. No matter we are a small private place, family business, without any funding support, but we do our best to bring up the image to be one of the best places of its kind in Thailand.
      We have recently produced some books on insects coming from our results both in English and Thai for sales. A special insect training program for university students has been done annually during their long vacation. Our webpage and place can be a supplementary ideal educational insect centre to demonstrate the key activities on insects as well as distribute useful information about them. We are still active in this field and know how important roles the insects and would like to make use of our knowledge benefit to the public as much as possible. However, we stand on our own investment with very low profit in the low tourist season, but the admiration from visitors have made us stronger and carry on this challenging work as long as we can.       สวนสัตว์แมลงสยาม (Siam Insect5 Zoo & Museum - SIZ)  สถานที่เพาะเลี้ยงและแสดงแมลงที่มีชีวิต ตลอดจนแมลงสะสมจากทั่วโลก  โดยเฉพาะการเลี้ยงด้วงปีกแข็ง  ตั๊กแตนกิ่งไม้  ตั๊กแตนใบไม้ ตั๊กแตนกล้วยไม้  ผีเสื้อ  แมลงปอ  มด ต่อ แตน กิ้งกือ แมงมุมยักษ์  และแมงป่องยักษ์ เป็นต้น มีสวนผีเสื้อขนาดใหญ่สำหรับศึกษาธรรมชาติของผีเสื้อ  พืชอาหารหนอนและพืชน้ำหวานอาหารของผีเสื้อ  และมีอาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์แสดงแมลงสะสมจากทั่วโลก ซึ่งใช้เวลารวบรวมมานานกว่า 30 ปี  นอกจากการจัดแสดง การเผยแพร่ความรู้แก่นักท่องเที่ยวทั้งไทยและชาวต่างประเทศแล้ว สถานที่แห่งนี้ยังเป็นสถานที่ศึกษาวิจัยเกี่ยวกับแมลง เพื่อรวบรวมและคัดเลือกผลงานที่น่าสนใจเผยแพร่ผ่านทางเว็บไซต์ www.malaeng.com หรือ www.siaminsectzoo.com และ จัดพิมพ์เป็นหนังสือวิชาการ หนังสือสารคดีเกี่ยวกับแมลงสำหรับเด็กและบุคคลทั่วไป เพื่อจำหน่ายทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษ เช่น ผีเสื้อ ด้วงปีกแข็ง แมลงปอ โรคและแมลงศัตรูพืชที่สำคัญ เป็นต้น
        วันนี้เรามีความภูมิใจที่สิ่งที่เราได้ทุ่มเทให้แก่สวนสัตว์แมลงสยามที่เริ่มส่งผลทางบวกต่อการศึกษาทางวิทยาศาสตร์ สาขาชีววิทยา โดยเฉพาะทางกีฏวิทยาที่มีค่ายิ่งสำหรับประเทศไทย สิ่งที่เราเตรียมพร้อมและจัดแสดงในวันนี้กล่าวได้ว่าดีที่สุดในประเทศไทย สำหรับสถานที่ที่เรียกว่า “สวนสัตว์แมลง”
        สถานที่และเว็บไซต์ดังกล่าว จึงเป็นศูนย์ศึกษาเปิดสำหรับประชาชน มีส่วนช่วยรองรับการดำเนินของหน่วยงานของทางราชการและสถานศึกษาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับแมลง สวนสัตว์แมลงสยามและพิพิธภัณฑ์ ดำเนินงานโดยครอบครัวเอกอำนวย ริเริ่มโดย อาจารย์พิสุทธิ์ เอกอำนวย (อาจารย์พิเศษ บัณฑิตวิทยาลัย ภาควิชากีฏวิทยา มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ได้รับรางวัลนิสิตเก่าดีเด่น ประเภทผลงานทางวิชาการ ประจำปี พ.ศ. 2553) จบมาทางอนุกรมวิธานของแมลง สาขากีฏวิทยา จากมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2525 และมีแมลงที่สะสมมานานกว่า 30 ปี ได้เปิดดำเนินงานตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2549 โดยมีคุณสุทธา เอกอำนวย (คุณบิน) ลูกชายคนโตซึ่งจบมาทางสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ จากมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ปี พ.ศ. 2549 แต่เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับแมลงจากการปฏิบัติงาน เป็นเจ้าของและผู้อำนวยการ รายได้หลักได้มาค่าเข้าชมจากนักท่องเที่ยวซึ่งเรียกเก็บในราคาค่อนข้างต่ำ เพื่อเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายสำหรับพนักงานหลายคน และค่าใช้จ่ายอื่นๆ ซึ่งโดยความเป็นจริงแล้วในระยะ 3 ปีแรกนี้มีคนรู้จักและมาเที่ยวกันน้อย ในขณะที่ต้องลงทุนในการดำเนินงานและขยายงานขึ้นอย่างกว้างขวาง ทำให้ประสบปัญหาการขาดทุนมาตลอด ทางสวนสัตว์แมลงสยามก็ยังยืนหยัดอยู่คู่กับเว็บไซต์นี้สวนสัตว์แมลงสยามเป็น สวนสัตว์แมลงแห่งแรก และแห่งเดียวของไทยที่มีการดำเนินงานเป็นรูปธรรมโดยไม่ท้อถอยจนเป็นที่รู้จักของคนทั่วไปอย่างกกว้างขวาง ในปัจจุบันซึ่งย่างเข้าปีที่ 4 แล้ว เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางเลือกใหม่เพื่อการศึกษาที่มีคุณภาพที่เป็นหน้าตาของธุรกิจวิชาการด้านแมลงของไทย

         ยินดีให้ความร่วมมือแก่บุคคล สถานศึกษาและหน่วยงานของรัฐทั้งในและต่างประเทศในการทำงานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับ แมลงที่มีการเพาะเลี้ยงและศึกษาในสวนสัตว์แมลงสยาม รับนักศึกษาฝึกงาน (รุ่นละไม่เกิน 6 คน) กิจกรรมการอบรมเรื่องการเลี้ยงด้วงมีการจัดขึ้นทุกปีในเดือนตุลาคม ส่วนการอบรมเรื่องแมลงทั่วไปมีการจัดเป็นครั้งคราวตามความเหมาะสมซึ่งจะมีการประชาสัมพันธ์ให้ทราบต่อไป

Our website, www.malaeng.com of Siam Insect-Zoo (SIZ) has been fully developed on August 3, 2007 while our Siam Insect-Zoo has been raised since October 1, 2006. There are a number of webpage viewed over 1 million times by the end of 2011. The busiest day so far on 23 September 2010 with 2,897 views.  It reflexes the interests of the people in the natural science especially on insects. The insect know-how cannot be relied on only available books and literatures of which we have rather limited and not enough. We should learn more from the working and from the nature. Our SIZ has been raised by our own money and still do at cost and sometimes at lost. However, we are proud of the publications we have and we shall do more to serve the needs of this kind for the public.
       เว็บไซต์แมลง www.malaeng.com ของสยามอินเซ็กซู (Siam Insect-Zoo) หรือสวนสัตว์แมลงสยามได้มีการพัฒนาเต็มรูปแบบตั้งแต่ 3 สิงหาคม 2550 ได้รับการตอบรับที่ดี มีผู้เข้าชมเว็บไซต์นี้แล้วกว่าหนึ่งล้านครั้งแล้ว สะท้อนให้เห็นความตื่นตัวในการศึกษาทางวิทยาศาสตร์ธรรมชาติเกี่ยวข้องกับสิ่งแวดล้อมและแมลง

      การศึกษาเกี่ยวกับแมลงไม่ใช่ว่าจะเรียนรู้ได้จากตำราเพียงอย่างเดียว เพราะตำราที่มีอยู่ไม่เพียงพอและบุคลากรที่สนใจเจาะลึกเรื่องแมลงมีน้อยมากนับจำนวนได้ จากการที่ได้เปิดสวนสัตว์แมลงสยามมาเพียง 1 ปีเศษ โดยใช้เงินส่วนตัวที่สะสมมาตลอดชีวิต รายได้ที่ได้รับจากค่าผ่านประตูไม่คุ้มกับรายจ่ายค่าจ้างพนักงานและอื่นๆ ในมุมมองของนักธุรกิจเรียกว่าเท่าทุน หรือขาดทุน แต่ก็ทำด้วยใจรักและยังสามารถประคองตัวอยู่ได้จากรายได้ทางอื่นมาช่วยสนับสนุน แต่ถ้ามีผู้ให้ความสนใจและเข้าชมสม่ำเสมอมากขึ้นก็จะช่วยให้สถานที่แห่งนี้ก้าวหน้ายิ่งขึ้นไปได้ ไม่น้อยหน้ากว่าสถานที่แบบเดียวกันในต่างประเทศ
       สิ่งที่เรียนรู้จากสวนสัตว์แมลงสยามเป็นการค้นพบความจริงเกี่ยวกับธรรมชาติที่มีค่ามากระดับโลก เช่นการค้นพบและตั้งชื่อผีเสื้อชนิดใหม่ที่พบครั้งแรกในโลกจากประเทศไทย 1 ชนิดและ 10 ชนิดย่อย การค้นพบหนอนและการดำรงชีวิตของผีเสื้อและด้วงปีกแข็งหลายชนิด ซึ่งไม่มีในรายงานใดๆ มาก่อนทั้งในและต่างประเทศ การได้นำความรู้และสิ่งที่พบเห็นมาเขียนเป็นตำราให้คนทั่วไปได้อ่านเพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการค้นคว้าวิจัยเพิ่มเติม เป็นเป้าหมายที่สำคัญ ดังจะเห็นได้ว่าหนังสือหลายเล่มที่ผลิตออกมาจากสวนสัตว์แมลงสยามเป็นหนังสือมาตรฐานที่ยอมรับได้ทั้งในและต่างประเทศ เป็นต้นแบบให้ตรวจสอบชื่อและเรื่องราวต่างๆ ได้ เช่น Beetles of Thailand, Butterflies of Thailand ทั้งสองเล่มนี้เป็นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ หนังสือโรคและแมลงของพืชเศรษฐกิจที่สำคัญ เป็นหนังสือที่ขายดีเพราะประมวลภาพสีสวยงามและเรื่องที่กระชับ จึงเป็นที่ต้องการของนักวิชาการ ร้านค้าที่จำหน่ายสารป้องกันกำจัดศัตรูพืชทั่วประเทศ และแมลงปอของไทย ปกสีเขียวซึ่งเชื่อว่าขายหมดไปจากตลาดนานแล้ว หนังสือทั้ง 4 เล่มกำลังอยู่ในระหว่างการเตรียมปรับปรุงเพื่อพิมพ์ครั้งที่ 2 และ 3 ต่อไป ซึ่งจะมีเนื้อหาที่เพิ่มเติมตลอดจนรูปสีที่สวยงามในแง่มุมต่างๆ มากขึ้นด้วย


The author was honored to receive an Outstanding Alumnus Award on Aggie Day ’54, 7th January 2011, from the Kasetsart University Alumni Association Under the King’s Patronage (K.U.A.) and the Kasetsart University Faculty of Agriculture. These awards honor four groups of recipients engaged in research, farming, private sector business, and governmental work including state enterprises. The author received an award as an Outstanding Researcher in Entomology. Certainly, this accolade was bestowed because of the author’s several published books in entomology, including Butterflies of Thailand and Beetles of Thailand, for founding the Siam Insect Zoo & Museum, and from the contributions through his own websites.
