The larger rice grasshopper, Hieroglyphus banian, a beautiful, but destructive pest of rice in the past 30-40 years in Thailand ตั๊กแตนข้าวแสนสวยแต่เคยเป็นศัตรูข้าวที่ร้ายกาจในอดีต เมื่อ ๓๐-๔๐ ปีมาแล้ว

        Medium sized grasshopper, body length is about 30-50 mm, adult green to reddish-yellow. Head broad, antennae filiform type, brown colored and darker at the tip; compound eyes brown with a dark short line marked inside; thorax elongate, with prominent black transverse lines, especially at the metathorax which much larger than prothorax; the front- and hind-wings long covering the end of abdomen reaching the hind tibiae; hind femora short, not thick, hind tibiae greying-blue. There is 1 generation in 1 year. Female lays eggs in a capsule oblong-shaped of 1-5 x 5-6 mm, usually at the end of rainy season during October to December. Eggs diapause during the cool and dry seasons for about 6-8 months and hatch at the early rainy season or at the end of May to June. The first nymph is yellow, then changing to various colors, greenish, reddish-brown, yellowish or black, but easy recognized by the black face. However, all colors will be changed at the adult stage - with greenish yellow face. The young nymph will develop by molting for 6-8 times within 1-2 months to be the adult. The record of damage was severe in the past 30-40 years ago, but not at present. The foodplants include rice where its common name comes from and others, such as  sugarcane, cotton castor, corn and sorghum.
        ตั๊กแตนข้าว ตั๊กแตนไฮโรไกลฟัส ตัวเต็มวัยมีขนาดขนาดปานกลาง ความยาวของลำตัวตั้งแต่ส่วนหัวจนถึงปลายปีก 30-50 มิลลิเมตร ส่วนหัวโต หนวดเป็นแบบเส้นด้าย มีสีน้ำตาล ปลายหนวดดำ ตารูปไข่มีขีดยาวสีดำในดวงตา ตาสีน้ำตาลอ่อน หรือสีน้ำตาลแดง ส่วนอกเป็นรูปทรงกระบอก มีรอยคาดขวางสีดำชัดเจน อกปล้องที่ 3 มักยาวกว่าปล้องที่ 1 และเส้นกลางหลังชัดเจนกว่าอกปล้องอื่น ๆ ปีกนอกและปีกในยาวคลุมปล้องท้องจนมิด ปีกยาวใสและยาวลงไปจนถึงเข่าของขาคู่ที่ 3 ขาคู่ที่ 3 มีโคนขาค่อนข้างสั้นแต่ไม่อ้วน ส่วนแข้งยาวเรียว มีสีฟ้าอมเทา  ตัวเมียวางไข่ลงในดินรวมกันเป็นถุง ขนาดไข่กว้าง 1-1.5 มิลลิเมตร ยาว 5-6 มิลลิเมตร ตัวเต็มวัยวางไข่ในช่วงหมดฝนจนถึงต้นฤดูหนาวราวเดือนตุลาคม-ธันวาคม ไข่พักตัวอยู่ข้ามฤดูหนาวและฤดูร้อนได้รวมเวลานานถึง 6-8 เดือนจนถึงต้นฤดูฝนคือปลายเดือนพฤษภาคม-มิถุนายน จึงฟักเป็นตัวอ่อน ตัวอ่อนเมื่อฟักออกจากไข่ใหม่ ๆ มีสีเหลือง ตัวอ่อนมีหลายสีต่าง ๆ กันเช่น เขียวอ่อน น้ำตาลแดง และสีดำทั้งตัว แต่ที่สังเกตได้ง่ายก็คือหน้าดำ แต่จะเปลี่ยนเป็นสีเหลืองอมเขียวเมื่อเป็นตัวเต็มวัย ตัวอ่อนผ่านการลอกคราบ 6-8 ครั้ง ภายในเวลา 1-2 เดือน จึงเป็นตัวเต็มวัย จึงมีเพียงหนึ่งชั่วอายุขัยต่อหนึ่งปี พืชอาหาร เคยระบาดในนาข้าว จึงได้ชื่อว่า ตั๊กแตนข้าว ต่อมาจึงมีระบาดในไร่อ้อย โดยการกัดกินใบจนเหลือแต่ก้านกลางใบ พืชอาหารชนิดอื่น ๆ ได้แก่ ฝ้าย ละหุ่ง ข้าวโพด ข้าวฟ่าง เป็นต้น
