Bingham tiger-wasp or Bingham hornet, Vespa binghami ต่อหัวเสือบิงแฮม ต่อหัวเสือที่น่าสนใจ พบจากเขตภูเขาในภาคเหนือของไทย

       A close similar species to V. velutinus variana in appearance and having yellowish head in contrasting with dark compound eyes, but differs in basal segments of abdomen without yellowish transverse lines which clearly seen in the latter. Medium to large sized, body is rusty brown to reddish- brown, with a lighter yellowish head, dark brown compound eyes, with 3 large ocelli larger than any other species, arranged in triangualr between the compound eyes. Maybe because of their nocturnal habits. Most of people consider hornets are highly dangerous and their presence often causes fear and panic. However, if they are not disturbed they will not be so aggrevise. The bingham tiger-wasp is not a harmful species. I have observed some of them came to the light hunting their preys. The body length is about 30 mm. Distribution: Russia, Maynam, Laos, Yunnan, Korea, Taiwean and N. Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai-Wiang Pa Pao)
       ต่อหัวเสือบิงแฮม เป็นต่อหัวเสือขนาดกลางถึงใหญ่ ที่อาจจะสับสนกับต่อหัวเสือดอยเนื่องจากพบในเขตภูเขาสูงทางภาคเหนือเหมือนกัน และมีหัวสีเหลืองอ่อนที่ตัดกับสีเข้มของตารวม แต่แตกต่างกันที่ส่วนที่ปล้องที่โคนท้องไม่มีแถบสีเหลืองอ่อน ลำตัวมีสีน้ำตาลมีขนอ่อนปกคลุมลำตัว โดยขนค่อนข้างยาวที่ส่วนท้อง มีตาเดี่ยว 3 ตาระหว่างตารวม มีขนาดใหญ่กว่าที่พบในต่อชนิดอื่นๆ อาจเนื่องมาจากอุปนิสัยในการหากินในเวลากลางคืน จึงมีตาเดี่ยวที่ขนาดใหญ่สำหรับรับแสงได้ดีขึ้น ต่อหัวเสือปกติถูกมองว่าเป็นสัตว์ที่ดถร้ายมีอันตรายสามารถทำร้ายคนถึงตายได้ อย่างไรก็ตามต่อหัวเสือที่อยู่นอกรังและไม่ถูกทำร้ายมักไม่ทำอันตรายต่อคน รวมทั้งต่อหัวเสือบิงแฮม ต่อชนิดนี้พบว่าชอบบินเข้าหาแสงไฟฟ้าในเวลากลางคืนเพื่อล่าเหยื่อ เช่นผีเสื้อกลางคืนที่เกาะอยู่อย่างไม่ระวังตัว รวมทั้งผีเสื้อกลางคืนที่อาจจะมีขนพิษที่มีขนาดใหญ่กว่าต่อหัวเสือด้วยซ้ำไป ต่อหัวเสื้อชนิดนี้มีขนาดความยาวของลำตัวเฉลี่ย 30 มิลลิเมตร พบตั้งแต่รัสเซีย พม่า ลาว ทางใต้ของจีน ที่ยูนนาน เกาหลี ไต้หวัน ในไทยมักพบตามเขตที่สูงในภาคเหนือ เช่นที่เชียงใหม่ เชียงราย ดังแสดงในภาพจากเวียงป่าเป้า
