The Mae Khachan Red Neo-stag Beetle, Neolucanus nitidus maekajanensis, unusual breeding ด้วงคีมนีโอแดงแม่ขะจาน แมลงเฉพาะถิ่นของแม่ขะจาน จังหวัดเชียงราย กับการจับคู่สาม

Neolucanus nitidus maekajanensis Ichikawa & Fujita, 1987
       Black and resinous-red above the elytra. Male, canthus is slightly rounded in front of the eye, not prominent; mandibles in large developed male each with a sharp erect tooth near the end, pointed upwards; pronotum broad with lateral angle blunt and hind angle sharp; elytra rather broad, oval shaped. Female, mandibles are short. Length, male 36-50 mm, female 40-41 mm. Distribution: Confined to N. Thailand especially at Tambon Mae Khachan, Amphor Wiang Pa Pao, Chiang Rai where the subspecific name comes from. The flying season is mainly in September, very little known about the biology of young stages. So, it is a challenging work to breed and rear this beetle. A number of them have been collected for captive breeding and rearing at Siam Insect Zoo and in Bangkok now. The males are no so aggressive so, I put two pairs of them in one breeding case. They live well and I saw three of them in marching at one night while the other female was left watching. If she could shout I think she would.
       ด้วงคีมนีโอแดงแม่ขะจาน หรือแด้วงคีมนีโอแดงใหญ่ เป็นด้วงคีมสีดำ ปีกแข็งคู่หน้ามีสีแดงยางไม้จนถึงแดงเข้ม เพศผู้มีขอบข้างตาด้านหน้าค่อนข้างโค้งกลม เพศผู้ขนาดใหญ่มีคีมปากขนาดใหญ่ที่ส่วนปลายมีหนามแหลมตั้งขึ้น สันหลังอกด้านข้างกว้างเป็นมุมมนตรงกลาง และมุมหักที่ด้านหลัง ปีกค่อนข้างกว้างเป็นรูปไข่ เพศเมียคล้ายเพศผู้แต่มีฟันสั้นซี่เดียว ขนาดเพศผู้ 36-50 มิลลิ้มตร เพศเมีย 40-41 มิลลิเมตร เขตแพร่กระจายพบเฉพาะทางเหนือของไทยโดยเฉพาะที่ตำบลแม่ขะจาน อำเภอเวียงป่าเป้า จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ โดยชื่อชนิดย่อยได้ใช้ตามชื่อตำบลแม่ขะจาน เพิ่งตั้งขึ้นเมื่อ 22 ปีที่ผ่านมานี้เอง ด้วงชนิดนี้พบมากในเดือนกันยายน โดยช่วงนี้มีด้วงชนิดนี้ออกบินมากพอสมควร อย่างไรก็ตามชีวิตในระยะตัวอ่อนยังมีการศึกษากันน้อยมาก จึงเป็นงานท้าทายสำหรับการเพาะเลี้ยงด้วงคีมชนิดนี้ สวนสัตว์แมลงสยามกำลังดำเนินงานอยู่ในขณะนี้ ผู้เขียนได้เลี้ยงอยู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ 2 คู่โดยใส่รวมกันในตู้ผสมพันธุ์และวางไข่ เนื่องจากเพศผู้มีนิสัยไม่กร้าวร้าว คืนหนึ่งที่ผ่านมาพบว่าตัวผู้สองตัวเกาะติดอยู่ที่ด้านหลังตัวเมียเหมือนเดินพาเรด ปล่อยให้ตัวเมียอีกตัวที่เหลือยืนงงอยู่ข้างๆ เป็นภาพธรรมชาติที่น่าสนใจ
