The Asian Giant Hornet, Vespa mandarinia from Mae Wong N.P. ต่อหัวเสือยักษ์จากอุทยานแห่งชาติแม่วงก์

    The Asian Giant Hornet is a very large sized hornet which almost a double size of Provespa. The body length is about 38 mm, wingspan 60-65 mm. Distribution in Indo-China, Japan including Thailand. The head is orange-yellow rather wide than long; the compound eyes, ocelli and antennae are dark brown. Abdomen dark reddish-brown with narrow yellow rings for the specimens from Mae Wong N.P. while the specimens from Japan with wider yellow or much wider than the dark brown rings at base.

ต่อหัวเสือยักษ์เป็นต่อหัวเสือที่มีขนาดใหญ่มากน่าจะใหญ่ที่สุดที่พบในประเทศไทย ใหญ่กว่าต่อนอนวันถึงสองเท่า ลำตัวมีความยาวประมาณ 38 มิลลิเมตร ปีกกว้าง 60-65 มิลลิเมตร เขตแพร่กระจายทั่วไปในเขตอินโดจีนถึงญี่ปุ่น ส่วนหัวมีสีเหลืองอมส้ม กว้างมากกว่ายาว ต่รวม ตาเดี่ยวและหนวดมีสีน้ำตาลเข้ม ส่วนท้องมีสีน้ำตาลเข้มเกือบดำ มีแถบสีเหลืองเป็นวงแคบๆ รอบส่วนท้องในตัวอย่างที่พบจากแม่วงก์ ในขณะที่ตัวอย่างจากญี่ปุ่นมีแถบสีเหลืองกว้างมาก บริเวณโคนท้องอาจจะกว้างกว่าแถบสีน้ำตาลเข้ม ต่อชนิดนี้บินเข้าหาแสงไฟฟ้าในเวลากลางคืน แต่ไม่ค่อยยอมเกาะนิ่งๆ
