Tha Chanthaburi Crow, Euploea orontobates Fruhstorfer, 1910, a rare crow butterfly from Chanthaburi ผีเสื้อจรกาจันท์ ผีเสื้อจรกาเฉพาะถิ่นจากจันทบุรี หายากและแทบไม่มีคนรู้จัก

       It was first described from south-eastern Thailand (Si Racha district), is demonstrated to be a senior synonym of Euploea conbuom Saito & Inayoshi, 2006, from southern Central Vietnam. The relationships and biogeography of this rare butterfly are discussed, and presented together with comments on the principal mimicry complex among the Euploea species of Indochina in the reference below. It is a rare endemic and confusing species in the East of Thailand, very similar to E. core godartii, E. camaralzeman and E. modesta. However, the size is much smaller than E. camaralzeman and the blue irridescent on upper FW is absent. The apical area of UpF not pale white, darker than that of E. core godartii, with extremely small gray brand. The FW dorsum is stronger convex than E. core godartii, but less convex and not concave near tornus as in E. modesta.
         Some photos have been taken by luck from a small road leading to Khao Soi Dao Waterfall on 2.vi.2010 at about 9.00 AM by Khun Kittisak Lampachava, Dept. of Agriculture.

         ผีเสื้อจรกาจันท์ เป็นผีเสื้อจรกาที่หายากมาก มีเฉพาะถิ่น มีความคล้ายกับผีเสื้อจรกาหลายชนิดจนคนทั่วไปไม่ทันสังเกตเห็นความแตกต่าง ผีเสื้อชนิดนี้ได้รับการจำแนกครั้งแรกจากเขตตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของไทย (ศรีราชา) ผีเสื้อชนิดนี้ซึ่งพบและจำแนกจากเวียดนามใช้ชื่อว่า E. conbuom Saito & Inayoshi, 2006 จากการวิเคราะห์ในเอกสารอ้างเป็นผีเสื้อชนิดเดียวกันกับที่พบที่จันทบุรีและศรีราชา ผีเสื้อจรกาจันท์ คล้ายกับผีเสื้อจรกาธรรมดามากที่สุด แต่แตกต่างที่ด้านบนปีกคู่หน้ามีแถบเพศสีเทาเล็กมาก ในณะที่ผีเสื้อจรกามีแถบเพศเล็กแต่ยาวกว่ามาก ปลายปีกคู่หน้ามีสีจางแต่ไม่ขาว ขอบปีกด้านหลังของปีกคู่หน้าโค้งออกมากกว่าผีเสื้อจรกาธรรมดา แต่ไม่เว้าเข้าที่ใกล้มุมปีกเหมือนผีเสื้อจรกาฟ้าป่าต่ำ (E. modesta) ปีกคู่หน้าด้านบนไม่มีสีเหลือบฟ้าเหมือนที่พบในผีเสื้อจรกาฟ้ามลายู (E. camaralzeman) อีกทั้งขนาดก็เล็กกว่ามาก

The Magpie Crow, Euploea radamanthus, a typical form of butterflies of the genus Euploea whereas some other butterflies or moths mimic them. ผีเสื้อจรกาดำขาว ผีเสื้อต้นแบบที่ผีเสื้ออื่นๆ หลายชนิดมักเลียนแบบ

Subfamily DANAINAE, FAMILY NYMPHALIDAE 
         Wingspan 65-80 mm. Male, UP dark blue-black, FW cell with apical one third white, with a small white spot at base of space 3, subapical bluish spots in space 4-7, a prominent bluish submarginal spot in space 2 and a bluish-white brand in space 1b, HW paler brown at costal half, with a pale subcostal scent patch and four long white dorsal streaks. Female background color is paler brown, FW with similar markings but all in white, without brand in space 1b but with an additional patch in space 2, HW with white markings including two series of submarginal spots and long basal streaks.Distribution: India to China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia. The other two butterflies which mimic E. radimanthus are Papilio paradoxa telearchus f. damisepa: Papilionidae and Euripus nyctelius f. euploeoides: Nymphalidae. Because butterflies in genus Euploea are considered as distasteful insects which birds or other enemies do not want to eat them. 
         ผีเสื้อจรกาดำขาว เป็นผีเสื้อขนาดกลางมีกว้าง 65-80 มิลลิเมตร เพศผู้มีสีเข้มกว่าเพศเมีย ปีกมีสีน้ำเงินดำมี สีน้ำเงินสะท้อนแสง มีแต้มสีขาว ไม่มีแถบเพศที่เป็นลักษณะเพศที่สอง พบทั่วไปในเขตอินเดียถึงจีน ไทยและมาเลเซีย เป็นผีเสื้อต้นแบบชนิดหนึ่งที่มีผีเสื้อกลางวันและผีเสื้อกลางคืนบางชนิดเลียนแบบ โดยเฉพาะผีเสื้อเชิงลายใหญ่ Papilio paradoxa telearchus f. damisepa และผีเสื้อปีกเว้าธรรมดา Euripus nyctelius f. euploeoides เนื่องจากผีเสื้อในกลุ่มจรกาในสกุลนี้ในระยะตัวหนอนจะกินพืชที่มียางเป็นพืชที่ค่อนข้างมีพิษสะสมไว้ในตัว เมื่อเป็นผีเสื้อตัวเต็มวัยจึงเป็นผีเสื้อที่มีรสชาติไม่อร่อย นกและสัตว์อื่นๆ ที่ชอบจับผีเสื้อกินมักไม่ชอบกินผีเสื้อที่มีรูปร่างและสีสันแบบนี้

The Tigers and Crows, Butterflies of Subfamily Danainae, Family Nymphalidae ผีเสื้อลายเสือ และผีเสื้อจรกา วงศ์ย่อยดาไนนี่ วงศ์ผีเสื้อสี่ขา

      The subfamily Daninae was downgrade from the family Danaidae in the current classification system. The members of this subfamily are commonly known as “tigers and crows”. The two main genera are Danaus and Euploea. The genus Danaus is divided into three subgenera, but so far the American subgenera have never been recorded from Thailand. In subgenus Anosia and Sulatura, the larva has three pairs of filaments on mesothorax and abdominal segments 2 and 8. Adult veins in Anosia are not blackened and male has swollen brand just below vein 2. Adult veins in Sulatura are blackened and the male brand is more prominent, appearing as a small pouch on UnH. The genus Euploea is usually black and brown, many of the members of this genus with UP especially FW suffused with iridescent blue whereas HW dark brown, FW slightly crenulated, but not produced. The FW dorsum is curved or bowed in male and straight or nearly so in female. The secondary sexual characters are important for dividing them into a number of subgenera. There are 35 species and 8 subspecies in this subfamily.
        ผีเสื้อในวงศ์ย่อยดาไนนี่ มีอยู่ 2 กลุ่มหรือสกุล คือผีเสื้อลายเสือ และผีเสื้อจรกา ผีเสื้อในวงศ์นี้มีลักษณะของตัวหนอนลายคล้ายลายเสือ ผีเสื้อตัวเต็มวัยก็มีสีและลวดลายเหมือนลายเสือด้วย มีแมลงต้นแบบในการที่ผีเสื้อเลียนแบบสีและลวดลาย (mimic) ที่รู้จักกันดีคือ ผีเสื้อหนอนใบรัก หรือผีเสื้อหนอนใบรักธรรมดา Danaus chrysippus ซึ่งทำให้ผีเสื้อที่มีปีกลายคล้ายลายเสือตัวอื่นๆ ถูกเรียกว่าตามไปว่า ผีเสื้อหนอนใบรัก อย่างไรก็ตาม ชื่อผีเสื้อที่เรียกตามผีเสื้อหนอนใบรักมีความไม่เหมาะสม เนื่องจากชื่อนี้ชี้นำไปในทางให้เกิดความเข้าใจผิด เพราะนอกจากผีเสื้อหนอนใบรักที่กล่าวถึงแล้ว ไม่พบว่ามีหนอนของผีเสื้ออื่นใดเลยที่กินใบรักCalotropis gigantea (Asc.) เป็นอาหารเลย ผู้เขียนจึงเปลี่ยนแปลงชื่อสามัญให้เหมาะสม ดังนั้นผีเสื้อในลำดับที่ D2-D15 สมควรที่จะเปลี่ยนเป็น ผีเสื้อลายเสือ แทนคำว่าผีเสื้อหนอนใบรัก ส่วน D1 ก็อาจจะเรียกได้ทั้งชื่อ ผีเสื้อหนอนใบรัก หรือผีเสื้อหนอนใบรักธรรมดา ด้วยเหตุดังกล่าวแล้วว่ามีหนอนผีเสื้อชนิดนี้ชนิดเดียวเท่านั้นที่กินใบรัก

         Wingspan 70-80 mm. Similar to an American species, D. plexippus in dark reddish-brown background color. Veins are darkened, darker than the former species. Male HW bears a subtornal brand at vein 3.  Lfp: Raphistemma pulchelum (Asc.) ข้าวสารดอกใหญ่
         ผีเสื้อหนอนข้าวสารลายเสือ ผีเสื้อที่มีรูปร่างและสีสันคล้ายกับผีเสื้อโมนาร์ค ของอเมริกา เพศเมีย ปีกคู่หลังจะไม่มีจุดดำซึ่งเป็นลักษณะทางเพศที่สองอยู่เส้นปีกเส้น 3 ซึ่งพบในเพศผู้ ผีเสื้อกำลังดูดกินน้ำหวานจากดอกหนุมานนั่งแทน ผีเสื้อชนิดนี้จะพบทั่วไปแม้ในเมืองซึ่งเป็นเขตชุมชน แต่พืชอาหารต้นข้าวสารถูกทำลายเพราะเป็นวัชพืชริมรั้ว การจะอนุรักษ์และเพิ่มจำนวนผีเสื้อ จำเป็นต้องอนุรักษ์ต้นข้าวสารและปลูกเพิ่มเติมในเมือง !
