Subfamily MORPHINAE or AMATHUSIINAE
Most of the members of this subfamily are large to very large sized butterflies. Sticopthalma godfreyi is recorded as the largest butterfly from Thailand with the wingspan as broad as 150-180 mm. The larvae of most of them feed on leaves of coconut and palms.
วงศ์ย่อยมอร์ฟินี่ หรือวงศ์ย่อยอะมาธูซิอินี่ มีผีเสื้อขนาดใหญ่ถึงใหญ่มาก เช่น ผีเสื้อป่า ผีเสื้อนางพญา และผีเสื้อไผ่ เป็นต้น ผีเสื้อที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทยอยู่ในวงศ์ย่อยนี้ซึ่งได้แก่ผีเสื้อนางพญากอดเฟร่ย์ ซึ่งมีปีกกว้าง 150-180 มิลลิเมตร ในขณะที่ผีเสื้อถุงทอง (Troides spp.) มีปีกกว้าง 135-160 มิลลิเมตร หนอนของผีเสื้อวงศ์ย่อยนี้ส่วนใหญ่กินใบพืชในตระกูลมะพร้าว หวาย หมาก ปาล์ม และไผ่เป็นอาหาร

The owl butterfly, Caligo sp. ผีเสื้อนกฮูก จากอเมริกา
Bird generally is an enemy of butterflies. It feeds on butterfly caterpoillars and also the slow flying butterflies or those which are on resting. However, birds are scare of the owl. This morpho owl butterfly is an incredible US butterfly. Its underside of the wings shown as above looks resemble an owl which can scare most of birds, the enemies.
ตามปกตินกเป็นศัตรูที่สำคัญของผีเสื้อ นกนอกจากจะกินหนอนผีเสื้อเป็นอาหารแล้ว บ่งครั้งยังจับผีเสื้อกินเป็นอาหารอีกด้วย โดยเฉพาะผีเสื้อที่บินช้าๆ หรือผีเสื้อที่เกาะพักผ่อนอยู่โดยไม่ทันได้ระวังตัว อย่างไรก็ตามนกก็กลัวนกฮูก ซึ่งอาจจะถูกนกฮูกจับไปกินได้ เช่นเดียวกัน แต่ธรรมชาติไม่ได้โหดร้ายกับผีเสื้อไปเสียทั้งหมดเมื่อผีเสื้อนกฮูกซึ่งเป็นผีเสื้อที่พบในทวีปอเมริกา ด้านบนปีกมีสีน้ำตาลเหลือบฟ้า แต่เมื่อพลิกดูด้านใต้ปีกจะเห็นเป็นรูปหัวนกฮูกที่เหมือนจริงมาก ธรรมชาติได้บรรจงสร้างไว้ให้เพื่อเป็นกลลวงสำหรับข่มขู่ศัตรู ขณะนี้มีแสดงที่สวนสัตว์แมลงสยามแล้ว
