Sphingidae: Lepidoptera
The head and thorax above are greenish yellow, more yellow at the abodomen, with a broad dark red-band usually covering 2 segments. The wings are hyaline apart from the fore-wing base. It resembles C. picus, but the latter having spur on the fore-tibia and abdominal dark band covering genrally one segment. Wingspan is about 44-60 mm. Distribution is from
ผีเสื้อจรวดเขียวปีกใส มีส่วนหัวและอกด้านบนเป็นสีเขียวอ่อนปนเหลือง ส่วนท้องมีสีเหลือง และมีแถบสีแดงเข้มกว้างคาด 2 ปล้อง ปีกกว้าง 44-60 มิลลิเมตร เป็นผีเสื้อจรวดปีกใสที่มีขนาดค่อนข้างใหญ่กว่าผีเสื้อจรวดชนิดอื่นๆ และมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าผีเสื้อจรวดเขียวปีกใสขาหนาม (C. pictus) เล็กน้อย โดยผีเสื้อขนิดหลังนี้มีหนามที่ปลายแข้งของขาคู่หน้าซึ่งไม่พบในผีเสื้อจรวดชนิดแรก เขตแพร่กระจาย พบตั้งแต่อินเดียถึงญี่ปุ่น ไทยทางใต้ลงไปถึงออสเตรเลีย ตัวเต็มวัยพบว่าชอบดูดกินน้ำหวานจากดอกไม้ โดยเฉพาะดอกผกากรองในช่วงเช้าและเย็น หนอนมีสีเขียวดังภาพที่สมาชิกกระดานสนทนาของเรา (Khun Bubble_Bee) ลงไว้ซึ่งได้เลี้ยงจากใบพุดซ้อน นอกจากนี้ยังกินใบกาแฟ และพืชอื่นอีกหลายสกุลดังปรากฏในรายงานภาษาอังกฤษด้านบน การเลี้ยงหนอนและถ่ายรูปไว้เป็นผลงานเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีมาก ช่วยให้มีประโยชน์ต่อการศึกษาแมลงในประเทศไทยมาก และเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ดีสำหรับการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับธรรมชาติของแมลงต่อไปในอนาคต
Meganoton nyctiphanes, a gray-striped hawk moth ผีเสื้อจรวดสีเทาลายขวาง ดูเหมือนจะหาง่ายแต่กลับไม่ค่อยได้เห็นภาพที่สะดุดตาแบบนี้

The transverse gray-striped hawk moth is widely distributed from India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Andamans, Malaysia, Sumatra, Palawan. Mr. Christoph Keller kindly provided me these two photos taken from Sra Kaew, 9.vii.2008. It is very close similar to other Meganoton and Psilogramma. See some other photos for the comparison. One of its larval food plant listed was Sympharema involucratum (Verbenaceae) ดอกกระดาษ
ผีเสื้อจรวดสีเทาลายขวาง เป็นผีเสื้อจรวดที่มีขนาดค่อนข้างใหญ่ ปีกมีสีเทาลายขาวและน้ำตาลเข้ม ลักษณะเด่นที่แตกต่างจากผีเสื้อจรวดสีเทาอื่นๆ คือลายสีขาวที่ปีกคู่หน้าและหลัง และมีลายขวางที่ปล้องท้องแต่ละปล้องค่อนข้างเด่นในขณะที่เส้นด้านบนของท้องไม่ชัดเจนเหมือนผีเสื้อจรวด Psilogramma แม้ว่าผีเสื้อจรวดชนิดนี้จะมีรายงานว่าพบอย่างกว้างขวางในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ แต่ในประเทศไทยกลับไม่พบมากเหมือนผีเสื้อสีเทาชนิดอื่นๆ
The big nosed hawk moth, Craspedortha porphyria from Chanthaburi ผีเสื้อจรวดเล็กลายจมูกโต จากจันทบุรี
Craspedortha porphyria porphyria (Butler, 1876)
The adults are very little sexual differences. The background color of wings varies from light brown to blackish brown. I have seen some of them bearing a warning pattern resembling a man face with big nose and closed eyes. The adults was locally common at a certain place in Patong, Chanthaburi, about 20 of them came to the light at that night.
ผีเสื้อจรวดเล็กลายจมูกโต ตัวเต็มวัยมีหลายโทนสีจากน้ำตาลอ่อนถึงน้ำตาลเข้มเกือบดำ ด้านบนอกมีลายคล้ายหน้าคนที่มีจมูกโตแต่หลับตา ปกติไม่ค่อยพบผีเสื้อจรวดนี้บ่อยนัก แต่ถ้าพบมักจะมีหลายตัว เช่นที่ประตง จันทบุรีเมื่อ 27 มิถนายน 2551 มีบินมาเล่นไฟประมาณ 20 ตัว

The olive-green cut-winged hawk moth, Eupanacra bursiris bursiris, a rare and beautiful hawk moth from Khao Soi Dao ผีเสื้อจรวดปีกตัดสีเขียวมะกอก เป็นผีเสื้อจรวดที่หายากและสวยมากจากเขาสอยดาว
Eupanacra bursiris bursiris (Walker, 1865)
It is one of the most beautiful hawk moths of the trip to Khao Soi Dao in June 2008. Fore-wing with anterior half olive green, but the green color fades into brownish in old specimens. Its habitats are mainly in the north, central and southeastern territories up to 1,700 m. I have seen one at the early night. Some photos have been taken and then it flew away in the dark. It is an interesting hawk moth for further studies.
ผีเสื้อจรวดปีกตัดสีเขียวมะกอก เป็นผีเสื้อจรวดที่หายากและสวยมาก แม้จะเห็นเพียงตัวเดียวที่บินมาหาแสงไฟในตอนหัวค่ำของการสำรวจแมลงในช่วงปลายเดือนมิถนายนที่ผ่านมา อย่างไรก็ตามผีเสื้อชนิดนี้บินมาให้ถ่ายรูปไม่นานแล้วก็บินหายไปเลย แต่จัดเป็นผีเสื้อที่น่าสนใจและน่าติดตามมาก

The above photos of the month, June 2008,??the long faced cow are female of Ambulyx moorei Moore. 1858. The female is usually darker than the male, but sometimes light colored females are found. Habitats, widespread throughout the country from 150 to 2,000 m high. Larval foodplants are Buchanania-จ้าม่วง มะม่วงนก, Lannae-ตะคร้ำ (Anacardiaceae), Canarium-สมอจีน (Burseraceae). Distribution:
ภาพผีเสื้อกลางคืนประจำเดือนมิถุนายน 2551 นี้เป็นภาพ ผีเสื้อจรวดสีน้ำตาลแดงนายมัวร์ เพศเมียมีจุดแต้มที่แปลกเป็นเหมือน ?วัวหน้ายาว? ปกติเพศเมียมีสีเข้มกว่าในเพศผู้ แต่ในบางครั้งก็พบเพศเมียที่มีสีจางด้วยเช่นเดียวกัน สำหรับผีเสื้อจรวดตัวนี้ค่อนข้างแปลก มีจุกตาและจุดที่แทนจมูกชัดเจน ปลายท้องค่อนข้างกลมยาวเหมือนปากของวัวมาก

Hawk moths the Family Sphingidae is a large family of Order Lepidoptera. There are 176 species identified from Thailand (Inoue, Kennett and Kitching, 1997). Many of them bearing the incredible colored patterns of the wings?resemble to animal faces, big eyes, frog, death head and tree bark, for examples.
ผีเสื้อจรวดจัดอยู่ในวงศ์สฟิงกิดี้ (Family Sphingidae) เป็นผีเสื้อกลางคืนวงศ์ใหญ่วงศ์หนึ่งของแมลงในอันดับเลปีดอพเตอร่า (Order Lepidoptera) ผีเสื้อจรวจที่จำแนกชื่อแล้วที่พบในประเทศไทยมีประมาณ 175 ชนิด ผีเสื้อจรวจจำนวนมากมีรูปแบบของสีปีกที่พิสดารที่เรียกได้ว่าแมลงแปลงโฉมเพื่อประโยชน์ในการหลบหลีกศัตรูทั้งรูปแบบการข่มขู่และการพรางตัวให้กลมกลืนกับธรรมชาติ อาจจะเหมือนใบหน้าของสัตว์ใหญ่ มีดวงตากลมโต เหมือนกบเขียด เหมือนหัวกะโหลกผี และเหมือนเปลือกไม้ เป็นต้น?

Acherontia styx ผีเสื้อหัวกะโหลก
The death’s head hawk moth, Acherontia styx (Westwood). A sphingid moth bears a prominent picture of skull on the dorsum of thorax. This is a warning pattern to its enemies. The green-striped caterpillar is also adapted resembling the leaves and branches of tree in order to escape from its enemies as well. However, the caterpillar usually feeds at night and hides itself during the day under the bushes or under the ground. The larval food plants are beans and peas, sesame, tobacco, jasmine and cucurbits.
ผีเสื้อหัวกะโหลกเป็นผีเสื้อกลางคืนในวงศ์ผีเสื้อจรวด ลักษณะเด่นของผีเสื้อชนิดนี้คือการมีรูปหัวกะโหลกที้เด่นชัดมากปรากฏอยู่ที่ด้านบนของอก เป็นภาพลวงตาที่ธรรมชาติสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อให้ผีเสื้อชนิดนี้ใช้หลอกและข่มขู่ศัตรูเช่นค้างคาว นก สัตว์เลื้อยคลานต่างๆ ที่จะมาทำร้ายได้อย่างดี ในขณะที่หนอนของผีเสื้อชนิดนี้มีขนาดใหญ่ ที่ปลายท้องด้านบนของหนอนมีหงอนยาวสีกลมเกลืนกับลายของใบและกิ่งไม้เพื่อช่วยพรางตัวได้เป็นอย่างดีด้วย อย่างไรก็ตามหนอนกินอาหารในเวลากลางคืน ส่วนเวลากลางวันจะหลบซ่อนตัวตามพุ่มไม้ พืชอาหารได้แก่ ถั่ว งา มะเขือ ยาสูบ มะลิ และแตง เป็นต้น
