Yellow carpenter bees, Xylocopa aestuans แมลงภู่เขียวเมียเหลือง ภมรนักผสมเกสรที่ทำรังโดดเดี่ยวในปล้องไม้ไผ่

Xylocopa aestuans (Linnaeus, 1758)
The subfamily Xylocopinae, Family Apidae, someone placed in the family Xylocopidae. 
         Xylocopa aestuans male, the whold body covered with fine greenish yellow hairs while fmale is yellow with black and hairless abdomen. Carpenter bees are large, robust built, hairy bees and powerful mandibles that are able to bite and drill through various kinds of wood, such as baboo, pine or dried wood. Carpenter bees are solitary bees. The nesting holes are perfectly round and about the diameter of a finger. Female carpenter bees only sting when disturbed. Their sting can be painful. Males do not have ovipositiors and cannot sting. In the case of being stung, cooling the area with ice may be soothing. They consume only nectar and pollen. They do not produce large amounts of honey, only enough to feed the developing young. They are pollinators which play an important role in the pollination of wild flowers and agricultural crops. Nest defence behaviour can be seen generally the female. While the nest has been disturbed she will fly around the nest for some 5-10 minutes before going back into its hole agian when nothing happened.
         แมลงภู่เมียหลังเหลือง ตัวเต็มวัยเพศผู้มีสีเขียวขี้ม้าปนเหลืองทั้งตัว ส่วนเพศเมียมีส่วนหัวและอกสีเหลืองตัดกับสีส่วนท้องซึ่งไม่มีขน ผิวเรียบมันสีดำ แมลงภู่มีร่างกายใหญ่ มีกรามปากที่แข็งแรงสามารถกัดได้ และต่อยคนได้ถ้าถูกรบกวน การต่อยก็สร้างความเจ็บปวดให้ได้มากจึงควรเตือนเด็กๆ ไม่ให้เอานิ้วไปแหย่รูแมลงภู่ แต่ถ้าหากโดนต่อยก็ควรรีบประคบด้วยน้ำแข็งพอช่วยบรรเทาอาหารเจ็บปวดลงได้ หลังจากนั้นควรทาด้วยยาถอนพิษสัตว์กัดต่อย แอนตี้ฮีสเตมีน หรือยาหม่อง แมลงภู่มักทำรังเล็กๆ ในรูปล้องไม้รวก ไม้ไผ่ หรือไม้แห้งอื่นๆ ขนาดปากทางเข้าเป็นรูขนาดนิ้วมือพอแหย่เข้าไปได้ แมลงภู่กินน้ำหวานจากเกสรดอกไม้ เป็นแมลงที่มีบทบาทสำคัญในการผสมเกสรดอกไม้ ไม้ป่าและพืชที่ปลูกในการเกษตร แมลงภู่ค่อนข้างหวงรังถ้าเราไปเคาะรัง ตัวผู้ที่ตกใจอาจจะรีบบินหนีไปอย่างรวดเร็ว แต่ตัวเมียมักจะบินวนเวียนเฝ้ารังและอาจบินเข้าใส่ผู้รบกวนได้ บางครั้งตัวเมียจะเอาปลายท้องโผล่ออกมาปิดรูปากทางเข้ารัง และพร้อมที่จะต่อยถ้าใครเอานิ้วแหย่ที่รู
