        Diamond-back moth, Cabbage plutella, Short-hole worm or Small cabbage moth is one of the most destructive pests of the vegetable growing areas of the world. The adult pale brown in female and darker in male, with the creamy patch at dorsum looked like a series of diamond shaped where its common name comes from. The female adult can mate and lay her eggs in one day. Its life cycle is rather short about 14-18 days and there are more or less 25 generation a year. The larva is slim, narrower at both ends. The last pair of leg or clasper is strong and bi-furcated. Diamond-back moth has built up the resistant to many insecticides very quickly. Therefore the chemical control by one effective insecticide alone is no longer to be used. The alternating spray with different groups of insecticides or the intergrated pest control (IPC) with various control methods is recommended.
        หนอนใยผัก เป็นหนอนที่สำคัญมากต่อการปลูกผักทั่วโลก ตัวเต็มวัยตัวผู้มีสีเข้ม ตัวเมียมีแถบสีจาง ปีกยาวกว่าตัวผู้เล็กน้อย เวลาเกาะหุบปีกอยู่บนหลัง โดยแถบสีจางบนหลังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมข้ามหลามตัด หรือที่ฝรั่งมองว่าเป็นรูปเพชรหลายเม็ดมาเรียงต่อกัน จึงเรียกผีเสื้อกลางคืนขนาดเล็กนี้ว่า “diamond-back moth” ตัวเต็มวัยหลังจากออกจากดักแด้แล้วสามารถผสมพันธุ์และวางไข่ได้ภาย ใน 1 วัน และการมีวงจรชีวิตที่สั้นจึงทำให้แมลงชนิดนี้ขยายพันธุ์ได้อย่างรวดเร็ว วงจรชีวิตของหนอนใยผักใช้เวลา 14-18 วัน อาจมีมากถึง 25 ชั่วอายุขัยต่อปี ตัวหนอนมีลักษณะลำตัวเรียวยาว หัวแหลมท้ายแหลม ขาเทียมคู่สุดท้ายยื่นออกเป็น 2 แฉก เมื่อถูกกระทบกระเทือน มักทิ้งตัวลงดินโดยการชักใยและสามารถปีนเส้นใยกลับมาเกาะกินอยู่ที่เดิมได้ ดักแด้มีลักษณะเป็นรูปกระสวยมีใยไหมปกคลุม ปัจจุบันหนอนใยผักสามารถสร้างความต้านทานต่อสารฆ่าแมลงได้หลายชนิด และรวดเร็ว จึงเป็นการยากที่จะป้องกันกำจัดด้วยสารฆ่าแมลงด้วยการฉีดพ่นเป็นประจำเพียงอย่างเดียว ดังนั้นการป้องกันกำจัดจึงต้องใช้สารฆ่าแมลงที่มีประสิทธิภาพหลายกลุ่มพ่นสลับกัน หรือใช้การป้องกันกำจัดหลายๆ วิธีการผสมผสานกัน
