Classification of the Lepidoptera to major families การจำแนกอันดับผีเสื้อลงถึงระดับวงศ์ที่สำคัญ

There were several arrangements of major groups of Lepidoptera. One of the first was division of the order into two suborders, Rhopalocera (butterflies) and Heterocera (moths), based pricipally on antennal characters. Later the order came to be divided into two suborders on the basis of wing venation and the nature of wing coupling; the jugatae or Homoneura and the frenatae or Heteroneura. Past authorities have recognized two major divisions within the order, the microlepidoptera and macrolepidoptera (referring to the insects average size). Many authors presented a review of the classification of Lepidoptera in Kristensen (1998) that eliminated suborders and treated superfamilies as the basic units of higher classification. This is more acceptable so far (Borror and Delong’s Introduction to the Study of Insects 7th edition by Triplehorn and Johnson, 2005).
