There are two suborders in this order. Nearly all members of Suborder Symphyta are phytophagous or paraphyletic group. In the Suborder Apocrita, the basal segment of abdomen is fused with the thorax and separate from the remainder of the abdomen by a constriction. The abdominal segment that fused with the thorax is called the propodeum.The major families seletced are followed Borror and Delong’s Introduction to the Study of Insects 7^th edition by Triplehorn and Johnson (2005).
แมลงจำพวกผึ้ง ต่อ แตน มด ผึ้ง ในอันดับ Hymenoptera แบ่งออกเป็น 2 อันดับย่อย แมลงเกือบทั้งหมดในอันดับย่อย Symphyta เป็นแมลงที่กินพืช ส่วนอีกอันดับย่อยหนึ่งนั้นมีอาหารที่หลากหลายลักษณะของปล้องแรกของส่วนท้องมักจะหลอมติดกับอกปล้องแรกมีชื่อรียกว่า propodeum และแยกจากส่วนของท้องที่เหลือโดยเป็นเอวคอด เป็นลักษณะที่เห็นได้ชัดในแมลงหลายชนิดในอันดับย่อยนี้ เช่นในมด เป็นต้น
